It's still going to show up in your Start menu, so you'd have to remove those shortcuts manually by navigating to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu. It should work fine running on a decent USB I think.
Oh and you might also want to take a look at your Personalization settings/Start menu. There should be an option there to toggle off Show Recently Opened Items.
