Hmm, this reminds me of the Populus game, which I played when I was little. That really was a game which let you feel like a God, though at that time I barely knew what to do there.

And as for my popular games that I've played, there are a lot, but to restrain them into a list, I would say:

And one of the best series I've played, and still have great replay value: SpellForce.
And also Age of Empires.

Microsoft Flight Simulator;
Microsoft Train Simulator;
Auran's Railroad Trainz Simulator.
