In response to Logan, though. I've played Settlers of Catan once. I think that's about as 'nerdy' as I have gone in terms of board games. I enjoyed it, and would play it again.

Settlers is considered "a classic". One of the most famous gateway games.
With the term "gateway" nerdy boardgamers refer to those games that are simple in rules and kinda fast to play, so you can kinda let anyone play, but indeed with some sort of twist into it.
With those, you might bring new people into the hobby.

Siedler von Catan is probably Settlers of Catan. As for card games, if it is played on a board, I suppose it still counts.
And Fenix, we are discussing board games. Chess is a board game. It is totally on topic.
